JOSE MAX LEON ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

Description

The English department is one of the academic support areas from the Jose Max Leon School which follow as main goal the students’ acquisition and interaction in a second language and develop the students communicative skills and competences by preparing students so as to be successful in the use of the language in a natural context. Looking at the daily reality of our country, day after day we see how the need to form individuals with the capacity to communicate in both written and oral mediums is increasing. This need occurs not only in the individuals’ native language but also a need to communicate in another language, in our case English as a Foreign Language; in order to meet the demands of the individuals who communicate in English.

Methodology

Our methodology is focus on four main approaches that facilitates the learning acquisition of a second language. The Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM), Total Physical response (TPR), Content Based Instructional (CBI) and the Communicative Approach (CAp). The philosophy of education is based on the principles of personal autonomy, responsibility, and excellence. These are ideals with timeless appeal. Some of the features that have grown out of our philosophy of education are reflected in the following ways:

  • An environment that places emphasis on autonomy
  • Small, well managed classes with limited enrollment
  • Teachers who teach by guiding, not lecturing, students
  • A rigorous emphasis upon practical academic skills;
  • Knowing the measure of success is attaining one’s best
  • A school setting where personal responsibility is key

Legal Framework

The English Department is aim to form competent students with a minimum level of B1 & B2
(Intermediate and Upper Intermediate level) according to the Common European framework of
Language References (CEFLR). The General Law of Education (Law 115), the 230 and the 1290
of 2009 decrees, grants educational institutions the autonomy to establish their own parameters
and define their own educational policies to put themselves on the right track in forming outstanding
students who will become bilingual professionals at the service of their community for this new
millennium. The English Department is working with and supporting the project proposed by the
National Ministry of Education, Plan 2019, which makes reference to the Colombia Bilingual Plan.
This proposal aims for the goal “Colombians communicating in English as a second language
before the year 2019.”

Teachers

We have a group of teachers highly qualified so as to help in the practice and study of another
language, through the use of peer practice in specialized groups and audio-visuals. The team at
JOSÉ MAX LEÓN SCHOOL, through their experience with different methodologies, is well-versed in
the teaching of foreign languages; they are professionals with a high capacity and international back
ground for constant training and strategy development.

Benefits and Programs

The student will receive a Diploma of Certification in “Foreign Language Proficiency in the level reached” which is recognized by the National Ministry of Education. This certification is issued by Trinity College London.

The following aim to help describe the linguistic levels demanded in the exams and the existing programs of evaluation, with the purpose of facilitating the comparisons between the different systems of certification.

  • LEVEL A1: Corresponds to Beginner Level
  • LEVEL A2: Corresponds to Elementary Level
  • LEVEL B1: Corresponds to Intermediate Level

Taking into account the idea about “Learning by fun” The English department offers to the students the opportunity to participate in a short immersion program called “English Camp” the project forms part of extracurricular activities which focus on the interaction of a natural English environment and the development of the communicative skills, through the use of the language by interacting in activities like challenge games, dancing, cooking, playing music, singing and dramatizing at the end of the camp the students will have to perform one of the activities selected in a Talent show, they will receive a certificate as well.

This is one of the most wonderful projects of the English department in the year. Once a year the

use of English by singing and dancing the beautiful Christmas carols, the choreography, and lovely
voices this is what makes this show something that you will never forget!

4. Canada Immersion Program
The school has been working since 2009 in immersion programs in Canada. During the last years we
have sent more than 20 students so as to participate in mainstays that demonstrate the effectiveness
in the acquisition of a second language and the qualification of our students in order to be competent
in the use and development of the language. The students interact with native students in content
classes that require the total use of the language. The students reinforce their production skills by
speaking and writing. This has become one of the main projects of the school due to the international
academic relationship among Scholar´s Hall and the Jose Max Leon School.
